2 Corinthians 4:7 – Verse of the Day 2/7/14

2 Corinthians 4:7 Verse of the Day

Having outlined the key benefits of the move from the Old to the New Covenant in 3:4-4:6, beginning in this verse Paul utilizes the image of “jars of clay” to describe this movement in an extended description that continues through the middle of the following chapter. Clay jars were a humble vessel, just like the human body. The presence of Jesus inside us is a treasure that makes us glorious in spite of the poverty of our outward experience. Whereas outwardly we are wasting away, inwardly we have a perfect hope that comes from Christ and his Gospel.

Although Paul placed his hope in Christ and not in himself, we are often tempted to trust in ourselves and our own abilities. God promises to give you everything you need for this life if you place your hope and trust in Him for the next. Pray that you would know Paul’s hope, that you would find it in your eternal treasure in Christ, and that this hope would transform your priorities as you live from day to day.
