Colossians 2:17 – Verse of the Day 6/25/13

Colossians2-17

In this section of Colossians 2 Paul wanted his readers to see that Jesus set them free from both pagan idolatry and an improper view of the ceremonial precepts of the Old Testament. Paul not only explains that it is wrong to invent extra-biblical worship practices, but he also points out that the ceremonies of the Old Testament were fulfilled in Christ. Hence they were a “shadow” of the things to come; namely, the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the fulfillment of the prophecies of the Old Testament, and most especially of the ceremonies and sacrificial system. As you pray, consider how God designed history in such a way as to provide such an elaborate picture of why Jesus had to come and why his life, death, and resurrection were so important. Thank God not only for our salvation through faith, but also for the freedom He has given us to worship Him according to His own simple design rather than our own superstitious inventions.
