James 2:17 – Verse of the Day 4/27/14

James 2:17 Verse of the Day

Martin Luther is famously remembered for saying that we are saved by faith alone, but the faith that saves is never alone. A faith that does not lead us to follow Christ and love others is not a true faith. True faith is a gift from God that leads us to live for Him.

If thinking about that makes you feel convicted, that is probably a sign of true faith too! The ordinary way that the Holy Spirit helps us to grow in faith is by making us more and more grateful for the forgiveness that we have through faith in Christ. As we become more aware of our sin, we become more aware of how much God has forgiven us, and it is this sense of God’s love and forgiveness that is the true source of good works.

So the best way to grow in faith is to ask the Lord to make you more aware of your sin. Remember how much the Lord has forgiven you and ask Him to show you how you can live more faithfully in response to all He has done for you!

If you have true faith you will automatically do good works. It's part of living a Christian life. It's that simple.

Thank you so much for the verse Deborah! You said it simply and better as well. Getting ready to go worship now, and this post has reminded me once again how miraculous Grace is. To be given such a free gift that we could never earn for ourselves - God is so good! Jaime, I pray that Christ's work will fill you with peace, and love, and unshakeable hope. If you can keep your focus on Christ you will find the comfort and assurance and hope you need. He did it ALL for us :)

When you believe and accept Jesus as your savior, you will want to do good works, because you have the love of Jesus for others. Too many people, believe that because they do good works and are a good person they will go to Heaven. That is not going to get them to Heaven. Romans 10: 9-10

Jaime, you can do nothing to add to what Christ did on the cross for us. That is why he said "it is finished" before he gave up his spirit and died. This verse has confused a lot of people (myself included.) What it really alludes to is spiritual growth. We can do nothing apart from Christ, even our good deeds once we are believers are described as "filthy rags." BUT Christ has ordained good works fo us to do, and as we grow in our faith we should see evidence of those good deeds. We will never achieve perfection this side of heaven, but we should see evidence of spiritual fruit in our lives once we accept and trust in what Christ did for us on the cross. If we are seeing NO spiritual fruit, we should question whether we have truly accepted and trusted in what Christ did for us. Once we trust in Christ and believe in his death on the cross for our sins the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in us. You can do NOTHING to earn salvation, and the only way you can lose it is to reject what Christ did for the whole world. Moses was a murderer, David was an adulterer and murderer, and Paul spent much of his life torturing and killing Christians. God still loved and used these people because they repented and turned to him. If you trust and believe in Christ's atoning work on the cross, he will completely change you from the inside out (you won't be without sin) but you will produce good works and spiritual fruit because of Christ working in you. I don't have my bible with me to provide verses, but I can find them :)

I don't understand why people don't read this and realize they can't just "believe" themselves into heaven. Im NOT saying you can do a million good deads and get in, but you must work to get there. Just as we learn from the first two commandments given to moses- 1 love god. This requires daily effort to keep his commandments and do our best as jesus taught. W 2. Love thy neighbor as thyself. This requires love and work to provide them what they need through service. None of these can be accomplished by sitting on your couch "believing your saved"
