Voices: How do you make the first day of school special for your kids?

We’re rounding up some of our favorite bloggers to get their thoughts on faith and family. We asked them:

How do you make the first day of school special for your kids?

Leah of As We Walk Along the Road

Although we homeschool year round, I always talk up the first day of our new start, our new curricula. We go out beforehand and buy new school supplies, and we start the first day by going over our new schedules and looking at what the year will hold.

Kimberly of Living in the Sweet Spot

Every year, on the first day of school, my husband goes in late to work so we can both take the kids to school together. Once at school, we take as many pictures as we can of them and their friends. When I pick them up in the afternoon, we all go for ice cream.

Danika of Thinking Kids

Cupcakes! I find cupcakes and extra recess will bless any first day of school. We like to end a little early that day, too.

Heather of Learning As We Grow, Growing As We Learn

We homeschool, so in order to make it more fun we usually start with a special breakfast and maybe a new shirt or outfit. At the end of the day, we celebrate with a trip to a local ice cream joint!

Heidi of Our Out-of-Sync Life

Our kiddos love school which means that the first day of school is special in itself. We will begin the day with the kids’ favorite Breakfast Coffee Cake and family pictures – backpacks required. After school we will celebrate the first day of success with swimming and snow cones.

Allyson of All Our Days

We try to make the first day of school special by starting with a special breakfast. I haven’t chosen the exact recipe, but I’ll definitely stick with some sort of dish that can be prepped the night before and just placed in the oven in the morning…maybe a baked french toast or egg and bacon casserole.

Jessica of Grace for Moms

We like to take the obligatory, adorable front porch pic with a sign stating what year it is. We’re rather new to this (oldest headed into 1st grade) so I’d like to be more purposeful praying a special prayer over her the first day as well.

How will your family make your children’s first day of school special this year? Let us know in the comments!
