James 1:17 – Verse of the Day 7/10/14
What is the best gift you have ever been given? Although many gifts seem wonderful at the time we receive them, only the most special ones retain their wonder over time. The best gifts are the ones that remain meaningful or memorable as time passes.
The first chapter of James repeatedly contrasts those things that are firm and steady to those which are flimsy and fleeting. The one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, “blown and tossed by the wind” (v. 6). The one who does not listen to God’s word and do it is like a person who looks into a mirror and forgets what he looks like (v. 24). In this verse James teaches us that God does not change, and that his gifts are good and trustworthy. James calls us to value the things of God, things whose value does not change with the passing of time.
Take some time in prayer to thank God for the way that he has provided for you in the past. Ask God to help you wait patiently for His will, to trust him to provide for all your needs as He has promised in His own timing. Most of all, ask Him to help you to believe that what he has provided for you is all you need.
