1 Peter 2:24 – Verse of the Day 5/14/13
The Old Testament frequently referred to being hung on a tree as a form of a curse (for example, Deuteronomy 21:22-23). Jesus bore this curse in our place in order that we might be forgiven. This verse teaches us that while Jesus was a great moral person, his life and death are much more significant than a mere moral example. Jesus received the punishment for our sin in order that we might be made righteous.
What kind of God would bear the curse for sin in order to save a people who had rejected Him? How gracious, merciful, and loving our God is! Spend some time in prayer praising and thanking God for what He has done for us. Jesus died for us that we might also die to sin and live to righteousness!
