Acts 17:11 – Verse of the Day 4/17/13
As Paul traveled from Thessalonica to Athens he stopped in lesser-known Berea (about 50 miles southwest of Thessalonica). They may have been lesser-known, but as is common in the biblical narratives they were more “noble” than their better-known neighbors. Why? Because they studied the scriptures diligently to see if what Paul and his companions preached was true. This is sharply contrasted with the response of the Jews, who stirred up trouble for the new Christians (verse 13).
The Bible consistently holds up faith over unbelief, but it never holds up an uncritical or unthinking faith. Christians are called to study the scriptures in order to always have a reason for the hope within them (see also 1 Peter 3:15). As you pray, ask the Lord to give you a discerning mind and a heart that desires to grow in knowledge of His Word.
