Colossians 3:12 – Verse of the Day 4/12/13
The attributes described in this verse are all frequently attributed to both Jesus and the Father. Paul says that Christians are called to “put these on” not on their own strength in some sort of self-improvement scheme, but rather on the basis of what he has already written in verse 10 about putting on a “new self” (literally a “new man”). This is a reference to Paul’s frequent teaching that Christians are to “put off the old man” (Adam) and “put on the new man” (Jesus). Just as the Father clothed Adam and Eve in the garden after they had sinned, he continues to clothe us today but in a much better way!
Spend some time in prayer thanking God for the new life we have in Christ. Give God thanks that our old self is no more and that he has given us a new self able to grow in the very likeness of God. If there are attributes in this verse where you particularly need to grow, ask God to help you in these areas as He has promised.
