Deuteronomy 13:4 – Verse of the Day 7/25/13
As the people of Israel prepared to enter the Promised Land, Moses warned them about the danger of idolatry. Specifically, Moses warned them about the danger of false prophets (13:1-5), the danger of close relatives and even family members who might tempt the people to worship other gods (13:6-11), the danger of living in the midst of others who might offer the same temptation (13:12-18), and the danger of pagan rituals. The temptation to idolatry was real and dangerous, and the primary antidote to idolatry was faithfulness to the commands of God.
Just as the people of Israel faced the dangerous temptation of idolatry, we continue to face this same temptation in our own lives. However, where their idols more obvious, ours are more subtle, and perhaps more dangerous as a result. Spend some time in prayer asking the Lord to reveal specific idols in your own heart, and ask Him to strengthen your faith in order that you might follow Him more faithfully.
