Ephesians 1:3 – Verse of the Day 6/24/13
The terminology of this verse is rich in biblical background and significance. First, the threefold blessing of this verse structures the entire doxology which follows in Ephesians 1:3-14: We bless the Father (1:3-6), the Father has blessed us in Christ (1:7-12), and these blessings are sealed by the Spirit (1:13-14). Second, the phrase “heavenly places” occurs five times in Ephesians and is one of the book’s major themes. Jesus has been raised to heavenly places (1:20), and because believers have been united with him we are likewise raised up and seated there as well (2:6).
As you pray, consider with wonder the reality that we have been united to Christ. Although we often lives as if we are merely earthly citizens, it is important to remember that our true citizenship is in Heaven with Jesus. In the bustle and distractions of everyday life it is so easy to forget that reality. Ask God to help you to remember the location of your true citizenship, and as you remember that blessing give God thanks and bless Him as well.
