Genesis 1:1 – Verse of the Day 2/9/14
The opening verse of the Bible summarizes the Genesis creation narrative and would have been read as a shocking contradiction of the creation myths of Israel’s ancient contemporaries. Here God exists before the creation and is not himself part of the created order. “God” is a plural name, but there is only one God, hinting at the Trinitarian nature of God’s existence but denying the existence of a hierarchy of various deities. Most shocking, God created everything and orders it according to the wise counsel of his will.
