Genesis 1:26 – Verse of the Day 3/22/13
The creation of human beings was the crowning event of the Genesis creation narrative. God pronounced all of the creation good, and the Bible’s authors frequently remind us that while the whole creation reflects God’s glory, nothing in the creation does so as directly as the humans who he created in His own image. In the Ancient Near East it was typical religious practice to place an idol (an image of the deity) in the center of a temple, and so it is rather shocking to find in Genesis that the Garden of Eden is an earthly temple and that human beings themselves are the image of the one true God!
Spend some time reflecting on what it means to be created in the image of God, called to reflect God’s glory, and given the high calling of caring for the creation. Thank God for both this high calling and the fact that we have not only been created in His image but restored to it in spite of our sin by the person and work of Jesus Christ.
