Psalm 75:1 – Verse of the Day 11/19/14
If you have ever been to a live sporting event or a concert you know how experiencing something in the presence of others can make the experience even more powerful and memorable. Watching your favorite team on TV is one thing. Going to the game and watching your favorite team with thousands of other fans is a tremendous experience.
Psalm 75 is a song of thanksgiving for God’s works of redemption. It begins as a song for the whole community and ends as the song of a single person representing the community before the Lord. In this song, God appears as the one who sovereignly chooses the right time to act, the one who holds the whole world together, and the one who judges all people with perfect justice. He is a God who faithfully saves His people, and so the psalmist calls us to give thanks. The power of this thankfulness is rooted in the loving acts of God experienced in the presence of God’s people. Worshipping with others helps us to worship by ourselves.
It is easy to take all that God has done for us for granted. Spend some time in prayer, recounting specific examples of God’s wondrous deeds, both in the Bible and in your own life. Praise Him with thanks and joy for all He has done!
