Psalm 95:1 – Verse of the Day 1/10/15
When you hear the word “obey” what is the first thing that comes to mind? Often we think of obedience as a limitation or a restriction. It is something that prevents us from doing what we really want to do. But that is not the way the Bible talks about obedience.
In the Psalms, obeying God is the only path to true joy. This verse is from one of the more joyful songs of praise in the whole Bible. Interestingly, though, the end of the song also takes a serious look at obedience. The author wants us to see that our “songs of praise” ought to be filled with “joyful noise” that leads us to pour over the scriptures seeking to understand and obey God’s commands. Joy and obedience are closely connected.
It is easy for us to forget the Bible’s encouragement to praise God freely and in all things. Spend some time worshipping the God who not only created you, but loved you enough to save you. As you worship with joy, consider how you might serve this loving and merciful Father who has saved you for his good purposes.
