Romans 5:1 – Verse of the Day 3/15/13
Chapter 5 is the hinge of the book of Romans. Having previously explained that all have sinned and that forgiveness for sin and the gift of God’s righteousness can only come not by works but by grace and through faith alone, Paul here begins to transition to a discussion of the Christian’s growth in grace. The gifts of peace and hope are two of the primary benefits of salvation, and the Christian hope of salvation is so certain that even suffering can only serve to strengthen it.
How do you respond to suffering? Spend some time in prayer, thanking God for the absolute certainty of forgiveness for sin. As you reflect on this hope, consider how its certainty might help you to prepare for present and future suffering.
