Romans 8:26 – Verse of the Day 6/18/13
After examining the new life we have in Christ in chapter 6 as well as the ongoing reality of our struggle with sin even as Christians in chapter 7, in Romans 8 Paul turns to the role of the Holy Spirit in the Christian life. Here the Spirit of life has set us free from the law of sin and death (8:2), is the ground of the transition from the death of our sinful nature to the new life we have in Christ (8:4-17), is the only root of true peace (8:6), is the antidote to fear (8:15), and is the source of our adoption into God’s family (8:15-17). This verse communicates the beautiful truth that the Spirit so conforms our own will to God’s will that even when we do not know how to pray the Spirit intercedes on our behalf.
God has called us into an intimate relationship with Him through His Spirit. Even when we do not know how to pray the Holy Spirit enables our communion with God in spite of our inability. As you pray take comfort in the truth that we do not have to “have it all together” or say just the right thing. Instead, throw yourself at the mercy of God, ask that His will be done, and pray that we will continually conform your desires with His own by the power of His Holy Spirit.
