1 John 1:7 – Verse of the Day 9/11/13
In his first letter, John paints a stark contrast between those who walk in darkness and those who walk in the light. Those who love God demonstrate the reality of that love in the way that they live. At the same time, this verse must be read along with the two that follow, for in verse 9, John writes that “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” Therefore, John’s point is not that Christians live perfect lives, but rather that we should seek to honor God by the way that we live and to readily seek His forgiveness when we fail.
As you pray, consider whether there are any aspects of your life that are more characterized by “darkness” and “light.” As you ask the Lord’s forgiveness for these areas of unfaithfulness, consider whether there are any practical steps that you might take to walk more faithfully in the light. Ask the Lord to give you the strength necessary to take these steps in order to honor Him and demonstrate your thankfulness for the wonderful grace we have received through Jesus’ work on the cross.
