Genesis 1:26 – Verse of the Day 4/5/13
In contrast to other Ancient Near Eastern creation stories, in the Bible both men and women are equally created in God’s image. Even more interestingly, the image of God (singular) is expressed in a plurality of persons. The existence of simultaneous plurality and singularity in the image of God has led many Bible scholars to wonder whether this verse might teach the Trinity in the very first chapter of the Bible, and the threefold use of the verb “created” only underlines this question even more boldly.
This verse explodes with invitations to prayer! Praise God for the beautiful mystery of his Trinitarian being. The one true God is also three persons, the Father who sent the Son for our salvation, the Son who was sent willingly as a sacrifice for sins, and the Holy Spirit who enables us to receive the benefits of the Son in order to have a relationship with our Heavenly Father. Praise God for the wonder of human identity, both male and female. Praise him for the gift of being created in His image!
