Hebrews 10:39 – Verse of the Day 6/14/13
This verse lies at a crucial point in the book of Hebrews. One of the primary themes of chapter 10 relates to the importance of persevering in faith, and verse 39 highlights the greater responsibility belonging to members of the New Covenant. Therefore it is even more important for members of the New Covenant to hold strongly to their faith. Hence verse 39 is the hinge verse, encouraging faith unlike “those who shrank back,” but very much like those examples of faith listed in chapter 11.
As you consider the examples of faith even in the Old Testament, consider how blessed we are to live as followers of Christ after the New Testament. Whereas formerly God’s people awaited a coming Messiah, we have the gift of knowing exactly what Jesus has done for us on the cross. Spend some time in prayer thanking God for that gift and asking for the strength to remain faithful in response to it.
