Matthew 22:37 – Verse of the Day 6/23/13
This verse lies at the heart of Jesus’ confrontation with the Sadducees (22:23-33) and the Pharisees (22:15-22; 22:34-46). In this verse Jesus responds to the Pharisees’ question: “Which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus’ reply is simple: love God with all your heart, soul and mind. For Jesus, this teaching is the summary not only of the Law, but all the Old Testament (22:40). Love fulfills the Law; it does not replace it.
Of course, the reality is that we all fail to love and so fail to meet the Law’s requirements. As you pray, allow this reality to lead you to God for mercy. The Law shows us our sin and points us to Christ in order that we can glory in our forgiveness. Pray that you would have a heart of gratitude to obey the commands that God has given out of thankfulness for his mercy for us.
