Matthew 22:37 – Verse of the Day 6/5/14
Do you ever think about what people mean when they say, “I tried my best” or “I worked as hard as I could?” Sometimes it seems like no matter how hard we try or work we could always do a little bit more.
So what did Jesus mean when he taught us to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind? How do we do that? What would it look like? Do you love God with all your heart, soul, and mind? In some ways, Jesus’ words simplify the Law of God given to us in the Bible. If we just love God like we should, we will automatically obey his commands. On the other hand, here Jesus shows us what a high standard the Law really is. Who of us could actually do this perfectly, totally, and all the time?
The primary purpose of the Law is to show us that we need a savior and to have our sins forgiven. As you think about what it means to love God with all your heart, soul, and mind, spend some time in prayer asking God to forgive you for how you fail to do this. As you think of God’s great mercy in forgiving you ask Him to show you specific ways that you might grow in your love for God and your “neighbor.”
