Psalm 33:21 – Verse of the Day 7/8/14
Imagine for a minute what it would be like to live with amnesia. What would life be like if you couldn’t remember the past? What problems would this cause for you?
In the Bible as a whole, and frequently in the Psalms, remembering the past is essential to living in the present and hoping for the future. As the psalmist remembers God’s acts in the past, he finds reason to trust in God even though his present circumstances seem hopeless. This verse of praise comes after the psalmist spends most of the psalm remembering the character of God, the story of God creating all things, and the story of God saving His people. After all of this, the psalmist offers this verse as a prayer for deliverance, and it reflects the trust with which the prayer is made. The psalmist can trust God because of his faithfulness in the past.
Just as the psalmist trusts God to be faithful in the future as a result of his faithfulness in the past, we are called to have the same patient confidence. Spend some time in prayer thanking God for his faithfulness in the past, and especially for Jesus’ faithfulness in offering himself as a sacrifice for us. The God who would do this is worthy of our trust and praise!
