Psalm 46:1 – Verse of the Day 11/28/14
When are you most afraid? Usually we are afraid when something bad happens and we forget that God is always with us. When we remember that God is always with us in the midst of everything that happens to us we realize that there is no reason to be afraid.
Psalm 46 is a son of thanksgiving for God’s powerful presence with his people. The psalmist does not fear, because the Lord promised to be near. This verse opens the psalm and the rest of the song continues the same theme. Later in the psalm, David says twice: “The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.” David knows he does not need to be afraid because God is with him, and he thanks God for giving him peace.
When life becomes busy or difficult, it is easy to forget that the Lord is always with us. As you pray, ask the Lord to remind you of his presence with you. As you remind yourself of God’s promise to be with us through the work of His Holy Spirit, ask the Lord to prepare you for adversity so that you will never forget that He is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
