Frequently Asked Questions

About the VBS

The traditional VBS version works best for elementary-aged kids or grades 1-5. Likewise, the kids’ activities in the Family Version will appeal most to elementary-aged kids. If using the family version, you’re not limited to only families with elementary-aged children. Older kids will still enjoy the activities too or they can serve as volunteers or join the adults for their small group time.

For families with pre-school aged kids you may decide to provide additional nursery accommodations during game/craft time and can use some of the free coloring pages from this site for added age-appropriate resources.
No, the content of this VBS is for elementary kids (Grades 1-5). However, if you have families attending with pre-schoolers, this site includes lots of free coloring pages that you can make available in the childcare area so that they are still engaging with the same content as the rest of the family. Your pre-schoolers can enjoy the main videos with their family and then break off into the age-appropriate group time where they can enjoy the free materials from the website.
Yes. Your VBS kit includes both the Family VBS and Traditional VBS, so you can easily customize these resources to best meet the needs of your community.
The What's in the Bible? VBS is designed to take 4 days and includes an optional 5th day for those who meet all week.
The What's in the Bible? VBS helps your attendees discover the BIG story of the Bible--God's Great Rescue Plan and what it means to live as a Christian. Each day teaches a greater understanding of the whole Bible and is broken down into these sections:
Day 1: What is the Bible?
Day 2: Why do we need the Old Testament?
Day 3: Why do we need the New Testament?
Day 4: What is a Christian?
Optional Day 5: Service Day
The main difference between the Traditional VBS and the Family VBS is an opportunity for grown ups and parents to participate and learn alongside their kids! A way for parents to have fun at VBS too!

Traditional VBS is what you're most likely used to--kids attend and start the day off with a What's in the Bible? video lesson before breaking up into small groups for games, crafts and discussion.

The Family VBS includes the whole family. Grown-ups will watch the first What's in the Bible? video lesson with the kids. Then, grown-ups will watch and discuss all-new videos from Phil Vischer about engaging the whole family in the story of the Bible while the kids break away for games, crafts, and discussion. Everyone then comes back together to review and wrap up the day.
Family VBS is a new format for VBS that involves the whole family. With Family VBS, parents attend with their kids. Grown-ups will watch the first What's in the Bible? video lesson with the kids. Then, grown-ups will watch and discuss all-new videos from Phil Vischer about engaging the whole family in the story of the Bible while the kids break away for games, crafts, and discussion. Each day ends with grown-ups and kids coming back together to review what was learned. It also includes some (optional) great take-home resources to continue the conversations at home.
Yes! This VBS is completely customizable. You can host a Traditional VBS and then use the family/grown-up content at a different time such as during a 4-week Sunday School class.
No. Although some of the small group discussion questions are geared more towards parents, any grown-up (or older teen) will benefit from this teaching and discussion time.
No. We have made both versions available in one kit for a very affordable cost. If you plan to have a traditional VBS, you can always use the grown-up content from the Family version at a different time, like a series for a Sunday School class.

- Director’s Guide Book

- 5 registration posters
- 1 sample t-shirt

Our theological frame of reference for "What's in the Bible?" could be described as "centrist Evangelical." We rely heavily on thoroughly vetted reference works like the NIV Study Bible, the ESV Study Bible and Eerdman's International Standard Bible Dictionary. We also have an extensive group of scholars who review our content.
The content of the What's in the Bible? VBS is written by VeggieTales® creator Phil Vischer and Lori Bethran and Amy Dolan.
When Scripture is quoted within the VBS content, we use the ESV version of the Bible.
The What's in the Bible? VBS is completely customizable, so you can make it work for any sized church.
We've created some really fun, affordable take-home products and resources you can use at your VBS. Samples of each item are included in your kit and you can order yours at our store. Resources available include:
- Prayer Wristbands
- A Family Devotional Journal
- A 15-song CD
- What's in the Bible? Sunglasses
- Nametags & Lanyards
- T-shirts

In addition to these items, families can learn more about the entire Bible together by watching our at-home What's in the Bible? series, which includes 13 DVDs--the whole Bible for the whole family!
Each of our crafts & games are designed to help reinforce the material that was covered in that day's lesson. Most activities include a printable item that you'll simply print from the included disc. However, some of the crafts and games will also require additional materials that are not provided in your VBS kit. When additional materials are needed, we've tried to make them items you already have or that you can easily find at a local store.

For your convenience, we've also provided helpful links to purchase the additional items needed, when applicable. http://whatsinthebible.com/vbs/tips-training/
To use this VBS, you'll need the ability to play the video content in a large group setting. We've conveniently provided two options you can play the video content. You can either play the videos using the included DVD or the kit includes a second disc with a .mov file for those who prefer to show videos using presentation software.
This VBS is designed to be very easy-to-use, so the expectation is that you don’t have to spend a lot of time decorating. If you’d like to decorate beyond the posters included in the kit, here are some ideas:
- use free coloring pages from the Activities section of this site and have the kids in your church help decorate the walls with scenes from the Bible. If you start with Volume 1 and work your way through Volume 13, you’ll cover the entire Bible.
- display the names of the books of the Bible on the walls
- use the included printed materials disc to print off and display some of the promotional resources
-use printable materials from the Church Resource Kit

What’s in the Bible? VBS includes a CD of songs from the videos that are used with several of the activities. You can also order extra CDs so that families can enjoy the songs from What's in the Bible? at home. The VBS does not include worship music materials specific to the opening or closing session, so you are free to incorporate your own music program. We also recommend worship resources from our friends at Seeds Family Worship. You can find them at www.seedsfamilyworship.net.
The VBS uses footage and content from the What's in the Bible? series in addition to new footage exclusive to VBS. What's in the Bible? VBS has curated and created content to present a program that helps your attendees discover the BIG story of the Bible--God's Great Rescue Plan and what it means to live as a Christian. Each day teaches a greater understanding of the whole Bible and is broken down into these sections:
