Ephesians 5:18 – Verse of the Day 9/9/13
This verse is part of an extended reflection on “putting on the new man” of Ephesians 4:24. Paul’s point is that we are no longer considered as sinners “in Adam” but are now considered as “righteous” in Christ. The reference to wine is probably more than a simple reference to drunkenness in general, for excessive drinking was a common aspect of many pagan religious rituals. Paul’s point is that God calls us to be filled with the Spirit in order that we might be united with Christ.
God has given us his own Spirit in order to bring us into His presence. As you pray, consider what it means to have a relationship with the one true almighty and holy God. Thank God for the gift of us Spirit and for His presence in your life. Pray that you would live in order to honor and please Him as a sign of your thankfulness for all He has done for you.
