Matthew 4:4 – Verse of the Day 10/12/14
When the people of Israel were hungry and wandering in the desert, God’s miraculous provision of bread every day is one of the most stunning stories in the Bible. Can you imagine how you would respond if God miraculously provided you with food for over 40 years?
When Jesus spoke the words in this verse, he was quoting from the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy. Whereas the people of Israel were unfaithful and ungrateful for God’s miraculous provision of manna in the wilderness, Jesus here expresses his confidence in the Word of God. When Satan tempted him to feed himself by turning a stone into bread, Jesus responded not only by quoting scripture, but by quoting a verse about how the Word of God has the ability to give life.
The word of the Lord is trustworthy and true, and God gives it to us as a gift to sustain us. As you read and reflect on this verse, ask the Lord to give you the same attitude towards God’s Word that Jesus demonstrated. Thank God that he has given us such a clear revelation of who He is, what He has done for us, and how we should live in response to Him. Pray that you would have the desire to love it and meditate upon it so that you may be wise and prepared to give an answer just like Jesus.
